Dr. Moore, an enrolled member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, is an associate professor at the Colorado School of Public Health of the University of Colorado Denver with the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health (CAIANH). Prior to joining the CAIANH faculty in 2008, she served in the Indian Health Service (IHS) for 20 years, with her last assignment as a Clinical Specialty Consultant with the IHS national program office for diabetes, the Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
While with IHS, Dr. Moore spent 10 years as a clinician serving the Navajo people, the Gila River Pima people, the Ute people of the Southwest, and the Quinault people of the Pacific Northwest. She also served in the Billings Area IHS office for 5 years as the Area Diabetes Consultant and Chief Medical Officer for health care facilities in Montana and Wyoming providing care to Northern Plains tribal communities. Dr. Moore formerly chaired the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Native American Child Health and the American Indian/Alaska Native Work Group of the National Diabetes Education Program. She is also a former member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Advisory Committee on Minority Health.
Dr. Moore is a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Oklahoma–Tulsa Medical College. She also completed postgraduate training in the Native Investigator Development Program of CAIANH at the University of Colorado Denver campus.
Dr. Moore is a past recipient of the IHS National Director’s Award, the HHS Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service, and the U.S. Public Health Service Outstanding Service Medal. In 2003–2004, she was featured in the National Library of Medicine exhibit “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.” In 2006, she received the Association of American Indian Physicians Indian Physician of the Year award.
Dr. Moore’s major research interests include urban Indian health, childhood type 2 diabetes and obesity, chronic disease management, and health disparities.
