Dontal Johnson, M.D., was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, a town made famous by Merle Haggard’s song, “Okie from Muskogee,” but spent much of his youth in the great state of Texas. After high school, he received his B.S. in clinical laboratory sciences from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He went on to work as a medical technologist at Parkland Hospital, the same hospital where President John F. Kennedy was taken after being assassinated. After two years at Parkland, Dr. Johnson attended Meharry Medical College, where he became acquainted with Vanderbilt University’s pediatric program and got to know many of their faculty. He graduated from Meharry in 2014 and went on to complete his pediatric residency training at Vanderbilt.
Dr. Johnson’s beautiful wife, Erica, is an avid basketball fan and home-schools their four fantastic girls: Mia-Jewell, Kimani, Amari, and Nala. His favorite part about pediatrics is that he gets to meet and make a difference in the lives of so many wonderful children. Dr. Johnson’s favorite part of Nashville is his church, Mt. Zion, including his incredible church family and Mt. Zion’s amazing bishop. In his free time, Dr. Johnson enjoys working out, reading, and playing basketball. When not working, he can be found playing with his children and spending quality time with Erica.
